What is a shutdown? :
Non-essential federal services are shut down and workers are furloughed.
Essential services, such as national security, air traffic control, Medicare, and Social Security, are kept running but employees are not paid until funding is passed.
Federal courts and agencies like the IRS, National Parks, and USCIS stop working when their emergency funding runs out. Delayed pay, slow government contracts, public service disruptions, and market volatility add to the economic impact over time.
When will this happen? :
If Congress fails to pass a funding bill, the US government is at risk of shutting down on September 30 and October 1, 2025. Current funding for the next fiscal year will expire on September 30. If the funding bill is not passed, non-essential federal services will be furloughed. Many government operations will be suspended. Some agencies have warned that they won't be able to sustain full operations beyond October 3, 2025, without new funding.
How long it could last?:
The shutdown could last from a few hours to a few weeks, depending on how quickly lawmakers reach a compromise. Some agencies have said they have enough funding to last through October 3-5.
