Indian Railways has introduced a new, passenger-friendly rule through IRCTC, allowing travelers to change their journey date without paying any cancellation penalty. This move aims to bring flexibility and fairness to train travel while reducing the financial burden on passengers. The policy will be implemented starting January 2026 via the IRCTC website and mobile app.
What Is the New IRCTC Rule?
As per reported by Economictimes, Under the new system, passengers holding confirmed train tickets can easily reschedule their journey dates instead of canceling and rebooking tickets. Travelers can log in to the IRCTC website or app, open their booked ticket, and choose a new travel date or train — provided seats are available. Only the difference in fare, if any, needs to be paid; no cancellation or rescheduling fee will be charged.
This feature eliminates the need to cancel tickets in case of last-minute changes. It aligns train bookings more closely with modern airline and bus systems, which have long offered flexible date changes. According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the initiative is a part of Indian Railways’ ongoing effort to make travel “simpler, flexible, and passenger-oriented”.
Current Cancellation Charges
Currently, passengers face significant penalties if they cancel confirmed tickets. These charges depend on how close to departure the cancellation is made:
More than 48 hours before departure: Rs 240 (Executive Class) or Rs 180 (AC Chair) plus GST per passenger.
Between 48 and 12 hours: 25% of the fare plus GST deduction.
Between 12 and 4 hours: 50% of the fare plus GST deduction.
Less than 4 hours before departure: No refund allowed at all.
This existing cancellation policy often leads to heavy financial losses for travelers who face sudden changes in plans. The new rule is designed to end this “unfair and outdated” system by letting passengers modify instead of canceling their tickets.
